Pilgrims (o-henro) have basically been walking the same route for over years following in the footsteps of the great Buddhist Saint Kobo-daishi, who achieved enlightenment on the island. I’m not sure how enlightened I am, but I certainly had some intriguing experiences, detailed in my second book, ‘ Tales of a Summer Henro ’.

If not not much help but there are good books on topic in english. Burning mountains and fighting monks has particularly funny way of telling authors mishaps along the way. Tales of summer henro is also good one showing rural area of japan before this pilgrimage became popular among non-japanese(now it's few hundred per year).
