    The Gallatin National Forest provides habitat for a full complement of native fauna, including the grizzly bear, gray wolf, bald eagle, and the Canada lynx. Come and explore this marvelous treasure and discover, for yourself, all that it has to offer. The Gallatin National Forest encompasses over 2, miles of hiking and riding trails, as well. The Gallatin National Forest was established in as an administrative unit of the Northern Region of the United States Forest Service, initially under the auspices of the Department of the Interior.     Gallatin National Forest is situated in the southwest portion of the very large state of Montana. It is bordered by the larger town of Bozeman on the north and runs to the state border of Idaho to the south. On its south end, the forest also meets up with the northern border of Yellowstone National Park, which is in northwest popular skiing town of Big Sky, MT, is located within. The Red Cliff Campground is located on the Bozeman Ranger District of the Gallatin National Forest 46 miles south of Bozeman, Montana. The campground sits adjacent to the scenic Gallatin River and US Highway Most campsites are among scattered pine and fir trees. Others campsites are located in open meadows away from the river.

    It should also be noted that while you can obtain a permit from the Custer Gallatin National Forest to remove small samples of petrified wood from the Gallatin Petrified Forest, this permit is not valid along the Gallatin Petrified Forest Interpretive Trail. Simply put, these geological treasures along the trail are protected by law, and should.
